5 Reasons Your Toilet Keeps Clogging

Boostability Team • February 6, 2023

A clogged toilet can be an aggravating and unpleasant issue. You can reduce the likelihood of your toilet clogging and keep it running smoothly by understanding the causes and taking preventative measures.

The following are some of the most common reasons for clogged toilets.

1. Flushing the Wrong Items

Non-biodegradable materials flushed down the toilet, such as wipes, tissues, sanitary napkins, and paper towels can cause pipe blockages. These items build up and cause clogs that can be hard to remove.

Furthermore, flushing non-biodegradable materials can cause pipe backups, resulting in sewage spills and leaks. Sewer spills are hazardous to one's health because they contaminate groundwater and emit offensive odors.

To prevent issues, you should keep these items out of your toilets.

2. Poorly Designed Sewage System

Pipes must be large enough to handle the waste and water that flow through them. Small pipes cause blockages and backups, clogging the toilet. Furthermore, debris can become trapped and accumulate in pipes that are not correctly sloped or graded, resulting in clogs.

Another issue with poorly designed sewage systems is the lack of adequate venting. Vents are required to allow air to flow into the pipes, which aids in the prevention of blockages and backups. The toilet may clog due to a lack of air in the pipes if proper venting is not used.

Also, some poorly designed sewage systems may lack enough traps. Traps are intended to keep sewer gas from entering the structure. If there aren't enough traps, sewer gas can go back into the toilet and clog it.

3. Overuse of Toilet Cleaners

Many toilet cleaners contain chemicals that can cause pipe damage and buildup over time. This buildup can cause blockages and clogs, making waste flow through the pipes difficult. Furthermore, excessive toilet cleaners can corrode and weaken the pipes, leading to clogs and blockages.

Overuse of toilet cleaners can also dissolve the wax ring that seals the toilet to the floor, which can lead to clogs. Finally, using too much toilet cleaner can cause the toilet to flush incorrectly, resulting in clogs and blockages.

4. Poorly Maintained Septic Tank

Septic tanks that are not properly maintained become clogged with solids and debris, resulting in toilet clogging. If the tank is overfilled with solids, the liquid level in the tank may rise, causing backups in the home's plumbing.

The outlet pipe transports the liquid from the tank to the drain field; if it becomes clogged, the liquid will not be able to exit the tank.

Another common issue that can arise from a poorly maintained septic tank is the liquid saturation of the drain field. If the drain field fills up with water, the liquid won't be able to filter through the soil as it should. Saturation could lead to standing water on the surface, harming your health.

5. Tree Roots

As trees grow, their roots can spread underground and potentially infiltrate your home's pipes. These roots are drawn to the moisture and nutrients in the pipes and can grow into them, blocking or restricting the flow of water.

In some cases, the roots can grow so large that they break or damage the pipes, causing leaks and other problems. Furthermore, the roots can cause pipe corrosion, which can lead to clogs.
