A water heater is an essential home appliance people use for bathing, laundry, dish cleaning, and cooking. While a water heater is a daily necessity in most homes, people often do not think about it until it starts malfunctioning. Whether the tank has seen better days or the heater succumbs to usage strain, a water heater only usually lasts for about a decade.
However good you maintain the heater, you will often need to replace it after running it for more than 10 years. As a homeowner, know the warning signs indicating you should replace the water heater to keep your hot water supply going.
1. Inconsistent Water Temperatures
Does the water sometimes come out as hot, warm, or cold? Inconsistent water temperature is a sign of underlying water heater issues. Have an expert check the water heater right away before it completely goes off.
If the water heater is relatively new, repairing it will usually restore normal functioning. However, if the heater is too old, replace it to save yourself the agony of repairing the water heater every time it breaks down.
What causes the loss of heat? The heat loss is often due to a buildup of mineral deposits that hinder the heating elements from working effectively. If the water does not get hot, have a professional repair or replace the elements.
2. Dirty Water
The water coming out of the taps should be colorless. If, however, the water comes out rusty or brownish, most likely the heater has a problem. Rust usually indicates corrosion on the pipes or tank, which can cause cracks and leaks. Ask a professional to clean the system for you. If cleaning the water heater tanks does not rectify the situation, consider replacing the entire system.
Also, the water sometimes will come out with a sewage-like scent due to bacteria inside the tank. A thorough water tank flushing will often eliminate the smell. Also, check if the anode rod is corroded and replace it.
3. Weird Noises
Weird noises are almost always a sign of an ailing water tank. Although some noise is normal, loud banging deserves your attention. Have a repairman assess the water tank to establish the cause of the noises.
Mostly, strange noises happen when the heating element burns the excess sediment and mineral buildup in the water tank or the hot and cold water mix due to a defective dip tube. If the noise persists, the water heater's system might weaken and start to leak. At this point, you may need to install a new water heater.
However, if no leak exists, a professional can flush the water and wash the water heater. This step often stops the funny noises.
4. Leaking Water
A leak might be the cause of a decline in water temperature. First, establish the cause of the leak. Most causes of the water heater leakage include poor maintenance of the water heater, age, poor plumbing, or a loose drain valve. If a loose valve causes the leak, you can tighten or replace it altogether.
Leaking water is usually hazardous around children and electrical appliances. Water leakage can also corrode the water heater's exterior and extend to the inner components. Repair a leak right away to prevent bigger problems later on. If, however, the damage due to leaking water is extensive, replacing the water heater is a viable option.
